The Hoyt Foundation August Newsletter

From the Office of the President

Would you be shocked to know that Team Hoyt was not the first name that Dick & Rick used when racing together as a team?

The original name was “The Hoyt Team.”

This name was actually used into the late 1980s as the name “Team Hoyt” started to take hold.  During the 1988 Boston Marathon and in 1989 when Dad and Rick completed the Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI was when the name became cemented as Team Hoyt.

Would you be shocked to know that the original motto of Team Hoyt was not Yes You Can?

The original motto was “Mobility IS Freedom.”

Yes You Can became the clear message of Team Hoyt after Dad did an interview after he and Rick completed the Ironman World Championship.  He told the world, “Our message is Yes You Can, you can do anything you want to do, as long as you make up your mind, you can do it.”  You can see and hear the words from Dad directly at 5:50 of this video:

"YES YOU CAN" is our clear message now.

Some pretty cool history there.  Well, it is August, so don’t be shocked that the summer is coming to an end.  Remember, Yes You Can still enjoy the warm weather and time with friends and family.  As long as you make up your mind, you can do it.

Easterseals Golf Tournament

Team Hoyt was once again honored to support our mission partner Easterseals Massachusetts at their golf tournament in Bridgewater.  Team Hoyt joined 27 other foursomes to help raise over $121,000 benefitting the Arthur H. Cort pool complex at The Bridge Center.

We love that a pool is being added to the Bridge Center.  Swimming and therapies delivered in a pool setting are a very effective way for individuals with disabilities to gain independence in movement.  Developing a sense of water safety is also important for everyone whether they have a disability or not.  Rick wrote about it in his children’s book.  Rick wrote, “When we would go swimming, my brothers would throw me into the pool then jump in and hold me up so I could breathe.  You should have seen people’s faces when this happened!  I trusted my brothers though and it taught me not to fear the water.”

To learn more about the Bridge Center and all of Easterseals incredible work check them out at their website below.

Summer Fun at the Maritime Museum

Team Hoyt, The Hoyt Foundation and the Hoyt Family are proudly working with the Custom House Maritime Museum to improve their accessibility to individuals with disabilities and their Inclusive Activities for young and young at heart.  On Saturday July 26th we set up our Team Hoyt booth and brought back the old fan favorite “Yes You Can Jam”.  We even had Leighton show us a new way to play the game!

We were supported by the Executive Director of the Museum – James Russell.

Our crew to man the booth included Hoyt Foundation Board Member Susan Grillo, her husband Rich Grillo and Bob Cronin, Chairperson of the Museum Board.

They will be out there celebrating summer every Saturday check them out at their website below.

Ira Says Thank You

A thank you and memory of racing with Dad and Rick.

Ira wrote to us and shared,

“Thank you for carrying on the family tradition and honoring your father and brother with your Hoyt Foundation. I used to see them at many events I would do. I remember seeing them at the Timberman 1/2 IM in NH and some smaller road races.  Of course I saw them at the Boston Marathon. I would always wave and say hi to them and give a big smile. We ran at similar paces but of course your dad was doing a lot more work than I was. Humbling.”

Ambassador Update

Team Hoyt Ambassador Michelle Nolan shared,

"I'll be running the Berlin Marathon in September and the Chicago Marathon in October and I can’t wait to represent TEAM HOYT. THANK YOU!!"

Her son Luke is recovering from his double hip surgery and only took 2 weeks off from running and training with mom.

Michelle shared that he's loving his fast runs down the mountain and seeing our 520 Running & Riding teammates along with our Team Hoyt Arizona teammates throughout the summer.
