The Hoyt Foundation April Newsletter

From the Office of the President

As you read this the 2025 Boston Marathon is only days away.  When athletes get ready to compete, they build up nervous energy and adrenalin to prepare for the event they are about to complete.  Dad was no different.  When waiting at the start line of every race he would check Rick’s chair once, twice, three times...  He would tie and retie his shoes.  He would go to the van and make sure Rick’s clothes for after the race were out and ready, and he would walk.  He would take short powerful walks to burn off a little energy but not too much.  Rick knew this routine well and at some events the energy was higher than others.  Rick even knew when it was coming - like at their first Marine Corps Marathon, Rick knew Dad was geared up and he had an idea to help break the tension.  He had his Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) dress him in full military fatigues and cover him in a blanket.  When Dad came back from one of his “power walks” he pulled the blanket off, he saw Rick in his military get up which made him smile and his tension melted away, he relaxed and they ran well that day.  This tension built for Dad one year in Boston more than any other.  It was 1993 the year Rick graduated from Boston University.  The interview requests leading up to Boston were tripled from the year before and stories of the first non-verbal quadriplegic to ever complete a degree and graduate with a Bachelor’s degree were everywhere.

Given all this attention and knowing how important this marathon was to Rick, Dad was building lots of adrenalin.  The morning of April 19, 1993 Dad checked Rick’s chair not once, twice or even three times… he checked it 7 times!  Rick smiled because he had a plan to break the tension.  When Dad took off for his second “power walk” Rick had my brother Rob and I put on his clever outfit and then cover him with a blanket.  When Dad got back, he removed the blanket to reveal Rick wearing his bright red graduation gown from BU!  It covered Rick from his neck to his toes in bright red!  Dad stepped back and not only smiled but he laughed out loud and the tension melted away, he relaxed, and they ran well that day.

Out on the course this year please look for our Team Hoyt charity team runners in their Red, White and Blue Tie Dye singlets with our motto “YES YOU CAN” on the back.

We hope you find your way to relax and run well and please remember the Hoyt Family, Team Hoyt, and The Hoyt Foundation wish everyone good luck running the marathon on April 21st and we hope you have a great run.

International Impact

We received a call from Boyd Dunleavey from Canada.  Boyd is a two-time survivor of a very aggressive blood cancer (Acute Myeloid Leukemia).  Boyd shared his story of meeting Dick and Rick.

"I started running in 2013 and was the Boston Marathon's 2017 third placed Adult with disabilities...  and have run it 4 times now. Meeting your Dad and brother was a heartwarming gift that I will always cherish. Your Dad told me he knew me and that I was loved."

This year Boyd will be running Boston for men with cancer, representing Man Up to Cancer, which is the world's largest support network for men with cancer.  He will be bringing 4-5 men with cancer to experience Boston and we are planning a meet up with Boyd and Team Hoyt in Boston.

Team Hoyt College Club

We have been talking with an amazing young man, Bennett Yue, about a cool idea he has - Team Hoyt College Club Teams.  Bennett is a student at the University of Virginia.  Back in January Bennett sent this message:

“Today I submitted the Team Hoyt at UVA club application and am really excited to be hearing back from them in the coming weeks. We have been slowly adding members and are looking forward to what we are going to be able to accomplish here in Charlottesville. I do want to thank you for all the advice and help that you have given me and I do really want to capture the mission and desire to provide opportunity here in Charlottesville though Team Hoyt.”

While waiting to hear back from the University, Bennett has kept busy recently completing the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach on March 16th.  Bennett finished the marathon in a time of 3:16!

More to come on this story as we see how the idea of Team Hoyt College Clubs develops.

Family Fling

On Saturday March 29th Team Hoyt was lucky enough to spend the day in Hopkinton as guests of the Lion’s Club and the Friends of Hopkinton at their 4th annual Family Fling.

It was great fun as we were excited to bring back “YES YOU CAN JAM” and it was enjoyed by all. Winners got a Team Hoyt Memorial shirt and got to keep their frisbee!
