The Hoyt Foundation June Newsletter

From the Office of the President

For “the love of family”.  Is the answer to many questions.  Why did Dick & Judy Hoyt bring Rick home all those years ago when the doctors told them to put him away, he will be nothing but a vegetable.  Because he was their first child, he was the beginning of their “love of family” story.  Why did Judy say, “Yes you can”, when Rick asked can I go to school like my brothers?  The joke three boys used to tell is that mom wanted the house to herself and wanted all of us out of the house at the same time.   But the truth is the love for her family made her want her three sons to have the same opportunity.  Why did Dick Hoyt say, “Yes you can” when Rick asked, “Dad can I run in that race?”  Dick said yes because his love of family led him to give his arms and his legs to his son so that he could be a part of the race just like everyone else.  This year at the Team Hoyt Memorial YES YOU CAN Run Together that LOVE OF FAMILY was there for all to see. Dick’s brother Herb was the official race starter and Dick & Judy’s Great Grandchildren, Parker and Sydney, were there to enjoy the race put on in their family’s honor.

Dick & Judy Hoyt’s love of family has also generated a way for The Hoyt Foundation to give back.  We, in partnership with the Flutie Foundation, are giving $60,000 in grant awards.  These awards support families that have a member with a disability through the Dick & Judy Hoyt Yes You Can Inclusion grant program.

The grants were awarded to the following:

Daniel - Circus arts training to be used in an inclusive setting.

Jie - Adaptive bike to join non-disabled peers in planned bike trips.

Jingkai – To be included in his school band.

Kenneth - Inclusive swimming program

Mason E. - Horseback riding alongside non-disabled peers

Mason L. - Horseback competitions against non-disabled peers

Matthew - Adaptive bike to join non-disabled peers in planned bike trips.

Sadie – To be included in a summer program.

Victoria - Horseback riding alongside non-disabled peers

We hope each and every reader of our newsletter feels that they are part of our ever-growing family.

Race Memories

This year’s race had many special moments, here are a few that were shared with us:

So cool to see three Duos could “Run Together” (cool name for a race!) for the first time ever.  Dave & Michael, Nate & Nick, and Isabelle & Ani were inspiring. ~ Susan

We loved the race! I ran it last year and returned this year with my wife Casey and 5-month-old son Oliver. I ran the 5 miles, and they walked the 2 miles. Oliver also tried his very first food after the race…a very small bit of ice cream! A really special memory and a fun day, we’ll definitely be back again next year and hope to encourage many others to join us! ~Aaron, Casey & Oliver

Thank you so much for another great race! It was our third year participating and it’s always so fun, special, and inspiring. We’ll be back! ~ Sarah

Absolutely a terrific job!!! I am so pleased that I can be part of such a wonderful experience!!

~ Joe 1 of 1 in the 70+ division

What a wonderful day Saturday!! I’m so proud of Troy for directing his first race!!’  He was telling me all about it when we were running back in the training season for Boston!!  I love seeing your family and I’m so happy that I was able to bring some of my family too, Frank, my sister Paula, and her husband Mike. We had a great time!!  Love the reunion with all the Marathon runners and the Charity teams!! ~ Tina

I had such a blast running this weekend for my third year! I got goosebumps as soon as the race started—it’s always such an incredible experience. Each year, my parents come out to cheer me on, and this year was no different. We had such a great time!  The volunteers were amazing and never failed to put a smile on my face as I passed them along the course. We also really enjoyed the ice cream truck this year—it was such a treat to have actual ice cream! Of course, all the other snacks and goodies were fantastic too.

~ Kelley

Thanks for another great year! ~ Jaqueline

Thanks to our race sponsors & partners who made it all possible:

Inspirational Runner

“I could be a vegetable, but I’m not. I can’t run like I used to, but at least I can do something, and I’ll take that and “run” with it.” ~ Andrea

Andrea shared her story with us.

“21 years ago on January 31, 2004, I was crossing the street in a crosswalk (I had just finished running), but I didn’t make it across 4 lanes.  Only 3 when I was hit by a truck going 40 MPH in a 30 MPH zone. I flew 40 feet in the air.  I was taken by ambulance to my local hospital to be revived then med flighted to Boston.  I was about a 40-minute drive from Boston (without traffic). The doctors had a conversation with my parents telling them that I was not improving as we thought. They told them maybe this is the time you start thinking about other options.  The doctors meant pulling life support.  My parents did not “pull the plug” and a week later I woke up. I went to rehab where I “woke up” for another month and a half.”

Andrea had to learn to walk again, then to run.  Four years of rehab and hard work and she was able to run a mile.  In 2023 she completed the BAA 10K and she is still running today.

That my friends is a YES YOU CAN story.

Easterseals Final Lap

Easterseals celebrated its Final Lap – the final phase of their Move with Me program – at the Bridge Center.  Move With Me is a month-long, all-inclusive opportunity for supporters to get creative with how they move to raise awareness and funds for the essential programs at Easterseals Massachusetts.  At the event Troy & Ryan Hoyt represented the Hoyt Foundation and presented a check for $50,000 to support their programs designed to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities.  They also got to enjoy the “perks” and play with goats.

We love our ongoing partnership with and ability to support Easterseals because of their programs such as:

Team Hoyt Denver

Team Hoyt’s newest chapter had its first race!  Meet Team Hoyt Denver:

The coolest thing was they were so well supported by the very first Team Hoyt Chapter – Team Hoyt Virginia Beach!!

One group flew to be at the race and one group drove from Virginia Beach to Denver with a trailer full of racing chairs.  They did this so that all the Duos could run the 5K at the Colfax Marathon weekend on Saturday and then on Sunday 3 Duos ran the half marathon.  What a weekend.

5K Participants:

Half Marathoners:

Can’t wait to see where these chapters take us next!

Summer Resource

One summer in the early 70s Dick asked aloud what are the boys going to do this summer?  Judy Hoyt had the answer – “They’re going to summer camp.” Judy had created Kamp for Kids, the first ever summer camp for children with and without disabilities.

In honor of her pioneering work, we share a resource that supports children with disabilities to go to day camps by providing what the child needs to be successful – Linclusion.

Linclusion Website

Linclusion is a nonprofit organization based in Ashland, MA, dedicated to creating inclusive summer camp experiences for children with disabilities. We partner with established day camps to provide one-to-one aides, adaptive equipment, and staff training; at no cost to families, ensuring every child has the opportunity to play, grow, and connect with their peers in a supportive environment.  As the rigor of the school year gives way to the joy of summer, every child deserves the chance to just be a kid. Inclusion not only supports children with disabilities, but it also strengthens the entire camp community by fostering empathy, friendship, and understanding among children of all abilities.  Linclusion is growing rapidly in response to overwhelming need, and we’re proud to help more families access the magic of summer camp each year.
