The Hoyt Foundation January Newsletter |
From the Office of the President |
New years is a time to think of the challenges that lie ahead. It is a time to ask your self: - Can I loose weight?
- Can I run a faster marathon?
-
Can I read one book a month?
- Can I commit to pushing myself in my wheelchair one mile a day everyday?
What ever it is that you choose to challenge yourself with remember the answer is YES YOU CAN! |
|
|
Last year the Hoyt Foundation helped Jacob participate in competitive horseback riding (see Grant Awardee Success Story in this newsletter), Blake to become a dancer, Brady to learn to swim and to provide running chairs to help more Duos get into running. Whatever you want to challenge yourself with remember we are here to help. The Dick & Judy Hoyt YES YOU CAN Inclusion grant application
process opens today! Here are some ideas of what has or could be supported through the grant: - Side by side participation with non-disabled peers in a swim program, the grant provides a private life guard to allow individualized support to ensure inclusive experience.
-
Grant provides the purchase of a racing chair to allow an individual with a disability to run in races with non-disabled peers.
- Competitive horseback riding supported by the grant to purchase specialized equipment to allow a rider to compete against non-disabled peers.Grant provides purchase of an adaptive ski prosthetic to allow an individual to participate side by side with non-disabled peers on their high school ski teams.
-
Participation in dance training and competitions to allow a student with a disability to compete in dance competition with non-disabled peers, grant lessons and staff to assist in dance training.
- Grant provides a mobile stand to allow a student with a disability to participate side by side with non-disabled peers in the college marching band.

The Hoyt Foundation is proud to be offering Dick and Judy Hoyt “Yes You Can” Grants to provide opportunities for inclusion for their child with a disability the way Dick and Judy did for Rick. Families with a child with a disability can request grants from $5,000 to $25,000 to help their child be included alongside their non-disabled peers. This year we are once again partnering with the Flutie Foundation who will match The Hoyt Foundation’s $25,000 so that there will be $50,000 of grant money available. The process for applying for grants opens today Rick’s birthday January 10, 2024. The grant application process closes on Judy’s Birthday March 8, 2024. Grants will be awarded on Dick’s birthday June 1, 2024.

We wanted to express our deepest gratitude for being selected as a recipient of the Dick and Judy Hoyt YES YOU CAN Inclusion Grant. This support has meant the world to us and has greatly assisted in furthering inclusiveness in Jacob’s life. This grant has allowed Jacob to continue to ride with his team at Living Hope Equine Therapy in Ponder, TX. Through these lessons Jacob has continued to gain independence, confidence, problem solving skills, goal setting skills, social and communication skills.
|
|
|
He has enjoyed the camaraderie of his incredibly supportive team of fellow riders,
trainers, volunteers and friends. Living Hope has become family to us. Due to receiving this grant Jacob has been able to purchase a new show saddle, work saddle, show bridle, helmet and new chaps in order to be able to compete competitively with his peers.
|
|
|
This grant also allowed Jacob to be able to compete with EWD (equestrians with
disabilities) riders at NSBA World Show in Tulsa, OK this past August and will compete in Appaloosa World Show in Fort Worth, TX in November. He will also compete in the Chisholm Challenge in Fort Worth in January and the Dalworth ApHC Spring Spectacular Horse Show in Ardmore, OK. Jacob competes in Western Pleasure, Trail, Horsemanship and Showmanship. These shows have allowed him to compete among disabled and non-disabled peers in a sport that he loves. Because of the independence and confidence Jacob has gained in the past few months in his lessons he was able to compete independently for the first time EVER in a local competition show at Poco Vista Ranch in Ponder, TX.
|
|
| We are also very thankful for the grant because it has allowed Jacob to become a
lifetime member in the Appaloosa Horse Club as well as the American Quarter Horse Association. He has also become a three year member of NSBA (National Snaffle Bit Association). These memberships will be enjoyed by Jacob in various competitions in years to come.

With Rick’s passing we needed to add a new board member. When trying to replace Rick’s voice there was only one person we could think of and that is John Costello. John has worked with Rick for what seems like forever to help Rick develop and use effective communication systems through Children’s Hospital. Please welcome our new board member:
John M. Costello, MA CCC-SLP Director, Augmentative Communication Program and ALS Augmentative

The newest Team Hoyt Ambassador is Nicole Woodbury. Nicole is not only an ambassador but she is running for Team Hoyt in the 2024 Boston Marathon! Nicole’s story - Our oldest son was born in December 2016 and in April of 2018 he was diagnosed with a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy. Our worlds were turned upside down. As of today, his prognosis is unknown. Philip is developmentally delayed, nonverbal and has mobility issues, although he is able to walk. Since we
received his diagnosis 5 years ago, we have been fighting and advocating for him.
We are huge advocates of inclusion. My husband and I fought to have him included in a regular preschool classroom so that he could thrive and learn from his typical peers. We also recently started a young athlete’s program through the Special Olympics in our area so our son had a team to participate with. Inclusion of kids and adults with disabilities is now one of our biggest priorities and something we are extremely passionate about.
You can support her run by donating on her page below. |
