The Hoyt Foundation August Newsletter

From the Office of the President

August is a huge month for Team Hoyt and the Hoyt Foundation.  We are full speed ahead with our team that is running and fundraising for us in the TCS New York City Marathon.   Believe it or not we are doing a lot of work already for next year’s Boston Marathon and Team Hoyt Memorial Road Race.  But our favorite thing in August is that we get to participate in the race that Dad & Rick ran in more times than any other race of their career - The Falmouth Road Race.

We lived in Falmouth for a little over a year when Dad was posted at Otis Air Force base.   It was awesome we lived on a finger lake right off the ocean we could easily walk to the Falmouth Heights beaches and of course we were right near the finish line of the race.  This race means so much to Team Hoyt and The Hoyt Foundation but it means even more to our family.  That is why I am so excited that we are the new Duo Division sponsor at Falmouth.

Please look for our iconic Ocean Blue Tie Dye singlets out on the course and if you’re not wearing one this year please reach out and get on our list to run for us next year.

I hope each and everyone of you enjoys the rest of your summer.

Ross Ormond & Andrew McAllister

Team Hoyt Duos are making an impact around the world.  Ross Ormond & Andrew McAllister who ran for our charity in Boston as a Duo this year sent an exciting update.

I hope you guys have had a great summer! We have some exciting news…. Andrew and I wanted you to be one of the first to know that Tokyo will be allowing duo teams as a trial for the 2025 Tokyo Marathon and World Marathon Majors has asked Andrew and I to be one of the teams. We received the email from WMM this morning confirming our place for 2025 in Tokyo which means our 6th star is on the horizon! There will be a few other duo teams, not exactly sure how many, but the fact that Tokyo is open to idea is a huge step for inclusion. We’ve worked tirelessly with WMM and The Tokyo Marathon Foundation and finally we have some progress! Andrew and I want to thank you again for allowing us to be a part of Team Hoyt and we feel we are forever part of the Hoyt family. What your father and brother started and what you and your family continue to do today to carry on his legacy is something that should forever be celebrated. Please keep doing what you guys are doing and never forget that together we can (do anything)….just Believe.

Maris Zunic uses the YES YOU CAN spirit to complete a very challenging half Ironman

It was a challenging day for everyone, pros, age groupers and volunteers! It poured rain all day long.

I almost didn’t start because of the forecast. I mentally checked out on Saturday thinking I will not participate but then decided to go to the swim start on Sunday morning to see if the water was choppy and then I would decide. It wasn’t choppy, just raining - a lot. They announced that the swim was shortened. As a PCA (Physically Challenged Athlete) I got to start right after the pro field of men and women and got my swim done but it got choppy halfway. The bike was an adventure. It poured rain the whole time. For me, very exhausting. I was tense and stiff but grateful to make it alive. By the time I started running, I was cooked. No energy and raining on and off.

My husband was also stressed, especially during the swim. He started 30 min after me and by then it was more choppy. He got caught right when the wind picked up.  They were pulling swimmers onto boats because it was getting bad. After he started, they cancelled the swim leg for all remaining athletes. More than half of the athletes never got to swim. They did a duathlon (bike and run).

But, I made it! My result is 7:28:29

"Yes you can!" was my mantra the whole way through.

YMCA Team Hoyt Family Center

Recently our President & CEO, Russ Hoyt, was given the honor along with Dave McGillivray and Becca Pizzi of providing an update on the progress being made by the MetroWest YMCA to create the Team Hoyt Family YMCA in Ashland, MA.

This project has already raised over $7.5 million through donations and state funding.  It will feature a state of the art child care center, swimming pools, amazing fitness rooms and equipment.  The best part however is that there is a commitment that this will be the most accessible YMCA in the U.S. and its design will inspire other YMCAs to ensure that everyone can and will be included.  Please stay tuned as we will continue to share the progress on this meaningful project.
