The Hoyt Foundation April Newsletter |
From the Office of the President |
The Boston Marathon and Team Hoyt have been connected since 1978. The first two years running unofficially as there wasn’t a category for one person pushing another person in the race. Then in 1980 Dick and Rick Hoyt became the first Duo (The Duo category still didn’t exist) to run with official number. |
.For the next 32 years Team Hoyt was a fixture in Boston |
In 2013 Dad had intended to surprise everyone and announce that it would be his last Boston Marathon after crossing the finish line. When the bombing happened Dad and Rick were still on the course and they were unable to finish. Right then and there Dad and Rick discussed it and decided they would be back in 2014. They would run the marathon together one last time and show the world just how strong Boston truly is.
They ran and finished Boston for 32nd time showing everyone just what “YES YOU CAN” means. The Hoyt Family, Team Hoyt, And The Hoyt Foundation wish everyone running the marathon on April 17th good luck and have a great run. |

This story is about, how Dad and I became official runners in the Boston Marathon! In the fall of 1978, dad and I made a goal, to run in the Boston Marathon. For two years we ran in the Boston Marathon as bandits. Dad asked the director of the Boston Marathon this question - why can't Rick and I be official runners in the Boston Marathon? The director of the Boston Marathon told dad this, “Dick, you and Rick have to run in another marathon, and you and Rick must finish that Marathon under three hours!"
The director of the Boston Marathon used my age for qualification for dad and me. I was eighteen in 1980. Dad, mom and I took 2 friends Carol and Wanda to Washington DC. Dad and I ran in the people's marathon or the Marine Corps Marathon. A few days before we went to Washington. I asked my friends this question: "Carol and Wanda would you both take me to the Army and Navy store?" At the Army and Navy store, I bought a Marine uniform. The morning of the Marine Corps Marathon, my friend put me in the Marine uniform. When Dad came into my hotel room, Dad was completely surprised! I wanted to look like a Marine, and dad had no idea I was doing it.
When dad and I were running the Marine Corps Marathon, our official finish time was two hours and 40 minutes. When Dad got our official results from the Marine Corps Marathon he mailed our official results to the director of the Boston Marathon. Once, the director of the Boston Marathon had Dad's and my official results, from the Marine Corps Marathon we got our numbers dad and I were then official runners in the next 32 Boston Marathons.
Respectfully, Rick Hoyt |

Team Hoyt's International Reach |
At the YMCA Inspiration Awards breakfast, we met Dave Fortier who shared his experience with us from an event in Amman, Jordan. Rola was able to run as a Duo with (well next to) Camels! |
Rola (in wheelchair being pushed by Dave) is a survivor of the 2005 hotel bombings in Amman Jordan. Being able to participate in that event (Dead Sea Marathon – 10K for us) with Dave was the first time she’s been involved with an athletic event since she was paralyzed… all thanks to the Hoyt chair that was built for her. Dave is the Founder and President of One World Strong Foundation. Their focus is on Peer-to-Peer Humanitarian Diplomacy. Dave supported Rola and other athletes to have what they need to compete. For Rola, it was a Hoyt Racing Chair designed and built by our own Michael DiDonato at Southbridge Tool in Dudley, MA.
